THE NAPOLEON CAT RECIPE: At the present time, the following methods are acceptable ways to "create" a Napoleon cat. As it may be pointed out to you - in theory - you are "allowed" to breed just about anything to our Napoleons and it still be technically called a Napoleon - please, please....don't follow this logic....for it is not the consensus of the Working Breed Group. For those who want to find a technical excuse to play with the genetics of this breed - let them look elsewhere for advice or for praise. All we need to produce outstanding high quality show potential Napoleon cats is all right here in the original playbook....plain and simple...a lot of hard work and quality cats...but very doable.
1. Standard Napoleon x Standard Napoleon - This union can still produce standard and/or non-standard Napoleons - but all are considered Napoleons.
2. Standard Napoleon x Non-Standard Napoleon - This union can still produce standard and/or non-standard Napoleons - but all are considered Napoleons.
3. Standard Napoleon x Persian (Himalayans & Exotics are considered under the Persian Breed Category) - This union produces only Napoleons whether standards and/or non-standards. Offspring will not be considered Persians nor registered as Persians - but only as Napoleons. These matings help to encourage the type on our Napoleons but caution needs to prevail to avoid producing those Persian traits that we have sought to avoid; snub noses, excessive hair coat, protruding brow ridge, etc.
4. Standard Napoleon x non-standard Munchkin - This union will produce only Napoleons no matter whether they are standard or non-standards. This union can be beneficial if you need to tame down certain Persiany traits from your Napoleon or maybe even to help incorporate a silkier coat from your Munchkin lines into your Napoleon lines.
5. Standard Napoleon x Standard Munchkin - This union will produce only Napoleons no matter whether they are standard or non-standards. Again, this mating could produce standard and/or non-standard offspring. This union can be beneficial if you need to tame down certain Persiany traits from your Napoleon lines.
6. Standard Munchkin x Persian Breed Group - This was the original mating to produce the Napoleon. It is still acceptable now to continue this. If you go this route, it makes sense to find the roundest Munchkin that you can find or you will be treading water trying to produce a Napoleon that looks anything like a Napoleon. This mating - as with the others - will produced "papered and registerable kittens" but the goal is to produce kittens that resemble the Napoleon written standard.
(In theory - you could produce "papered" Napoleons by using non-standards x non-standards.....or non-standards x Persians...but I am unsure what the ultimate goal is. In an extensive breeding program where you had visions down the road of their asset - again, this would be allowed and kittens could be registered but to what end? I state it here only to clarify what is allowed. There are a handful of breedings who are taking their Napoleons to unacceptable outcrosses; whether that is a non-standard Scottish Fold or who knows what. This is technically "allowed" within the TICA rules - again to allow breeders to work in certain traits from other sources that they deem beneficial. These unacceptable outcrosses would then show an unacceptable registration number on the papers so that these kittens could not be shown in championship status and those numbers then require several generations to work off that unacceptable outcross. Personally I would say that much of what I see done is messing with the original recipe and I don't care for that stance....and just because something is allowed doesn't mean that it has benefits. So, please tread carefully in doing this or in purchasing any kitten with unacceptable registration numbers.)
